Park restoration-Catholic Cemetery Update

As many of you may have heard, last week the Jackson Rancheria park restoration crew began the cleanup efforts at the Catholic Cemetery in Jackson.   Weather permitting, workers will be onsite Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. and will continue through winter until completion.  Restoration efforts will be focused on the surrounding areas only and will not include grave sites.  We will ensure to work carefully so not to disrupt the graves of those laid to rest.

It is important to us that we proceed with utmost respect and are asking residents of Amador County who have family buried at the Catholic Cemetery to join us in rejuvenating the area by cleaning up your family’s private plot.  Come see us during work hours and you will be supplied with lunch, beverages, gloves and any tools needed to get the job done.

If you have family members buried at the Catholic Cemetery, but cannot do the work yourself, we would be honored to clean up for you, with your permission. Please contact Suzie Reynolds at the St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Parish at (209) 223-2970 to grant us this approval.

For additional information, feel free to contact the park restoration committee at (209) 223-8405.

Court halts Dollar General

COURT HALTS CONSTRUCTION OF PINE GROVE DOLLAR GENERAL PROJECT

On November 14, 2014 Amador County Superior Court Judge Steven Hermanson ordered construction activities for the proposed Dollar General store in Pine Grove must stop immediately.

On October 24, 2014 Amador County issued a building permit to property owner Del Rapini to begin construction of the project. Last week the Pine Grove Business Alliance, a group of Pine Grove residents and business owners, filed a legal action challenging that permit. The lawsuit asserts that the Dollar General store proposed for that location violates the County's zoning ordinance and General Plan, and that the County had failed to evaluate or mitigate environmental impacts from the project as required by CEQA -- the California Environmental Quality Act.

Today, with construction equipment already on the project site, the Alliance asked Judge Hermanson to issue an immediate stay to prevent construction of the project until the court can rule on the Alliance's claims. Over the County's objection, the court agreed a temporary stay should issue immediately to prevent construction.

The County, Rapini, and Dollar General may file written objections to continuing the stay next week -- which the Court will consider at a hearing on Friday November 21st.

"I'm very pleased with the court's ruling," said attorney Brett Jolley who represents the Alliance. "The order keeps the status quo and prevents the developer from building an unlawful project before the court has an opportunity to consider the parties' arguments. This is sound preventative maintenance."

Alliance member Debra Dunn added, "Kudos to our local justice system! Multiple attempts have been made since July to openly discuss this issue including with the Board of Supervisors. Litigation has been a last resort but this outcome provides hope that justice can still be found in Amador County. We are grateful to Judge Hermanson for being willing to take this first step in a lawful consideration of the Pine Grove Community on this Dollar General project."

Frannie will prepare “Boston Brown Bread” mix in a can by placing dry ingredients into a can, along with recipe card and list of “Ingredients you will Need.” Idea: Frannie will have finished bread in a can that Anje can decorate. Idea: Anje can demo other cute packaging ideas for, say, cookie platters and snack-mix type gifts.

Food Gifts,

...........The How To Show

Bread in a Can…

To make a gift, place in a clear gift bag…

½ cup whole wheat flour

½ cup rye flour

½ cup cornmeal

¾ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon kosher salt

½ teaspoon freshly ground allspice

½ teaspoon orange zest

½ cup black raisins

Place the bag in a 1-lb coffee can or a rolled wafer cookie tin (400g size) and decorate. Include these directions…

To Make Bread: Preheat oven to 375. Coat the inside of the can with nonstick spray. In a large bowl, combine contents of bag with 6 Tblsp of canola oil, ½ cup of molasses just to combine. Add 1 cup of buttermilk, 1 tsp of vanilla extract and 1 large lightly beaten egg and mix just to combine. Spoon bread into the prepared can. There should be about 1-½ “ of clearance above the batter for the bread to rise. Cover the top of the can lightly with greased foil. Place can inside a deep-sided 3 quart oven-safe pot and pour enough boiling water to reach halfway up can. Bake for 1 hour and 15 mins or until edges of the bread begin to pull away from the sides of the cans. Remove can from the pot of water, uncover, place on a cooling rack and cool for 1 hour before removing bread from the can. Slice bread into thick rounds and serve warm or at room temperature with cream cheese and jam.

Frannie will demonstrate how to melt chocolate using a microwave and will dip spoons. Frannie Weinrob will have finished chocolate-covered spoons in small plastic bags and finished but unpackaged white chocolate dipped candy canes. Idea: Anje Omstead can give ideas on how to package spoons and canes. Thrift store mugs with sleeve of instant cocoa? Santa stockings?

.....The How To Show November 2014 – Food Gifts

Chocolate-dipped spoons

12 polished/decorated silver spoons

1 cup chocolate chips, divided

2 tablespoons butter flavored shortening

Cookie sheet or tray

Parchment paper

12 gift “pretzel” bags

Find spoons in antique stores and thrift shops. They don’t have to be silver, of course. You can duplicate this recipe with plastic spoons, too!

Line a cookie sheet or baking tray with parchment paper and set aside.

Melt ½ cup of chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl for 30 second intervals. Stir the chips after each 30 second interval and stop when chips are hot and melted. Be careful! Your bowl will become quite hot. Immediately add the other ½ cup of chocolate chips and the shortening and stir until all the chips are melted.

Dip the spoons into the chocolate, covering the bowl of the spoon, and place on parchment paper-lined tray to harden. Set tray in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to completely cool and harden. Place one spoon in one pretzel bag and tie closed with a twist-tie.

Stir your chocolate-dipped spoon into coffee, cocoa or warmed milk for an extra chocolaty treat.

Frannie will prepare “Apple Pie Spiced Hot Tea Mix” by piling crystallized ginger, whole allspice and cloves onto 8” square double-thick 100% cotton cheesecloth, tying closed with a bit of kitchen twine. She will place apple chips and cinnamon sticks in a teapot and attach four teabags and serving directions to the pot.

Recipe makes four teapots’ worth of gifts. Idea: Anje can give decorating ideas for the teapot and other ideas of wrapping the gift (say without a teapot…thrift store tea cups?)

...The How To Show November 2014 – Food Gifts

Apple Pie Spiced Hot Tea Mix This recipe will make four gifts…

1/3 cup crystallized ginger

1 tablespoon whole allspice

1 tablespoon whole cloves

2 cups dried apple chips (no added oils or sugar)

12 cinnamon sticks

16 green tea bags

Four 7 to 8-inch squares of double-thick 100% cotton cheesecloth

Kitchen twine

4 clear plastic gift bags

Divide ginger, allspice, and cloves among the four cheesecloth squares. Tie closed with kitchen twine. Into the bottoms of four clear gift bags divide apple chips and cinnamon. In each gift bag place four tea bags and one spice bag. Close gift bag with kitchen twine and include directions for making tea.

To Make Tea: In a medium saucepan, combine spice bag, cinnamon sticks, and 4 cups water. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for 20 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat. Add apple chips and tea bags to spiced water mixture. Let tea steep for 5 minutes. Remove and discard tea bags, spice bags, and cinnamon sticks.

Frannie will make “Christmas Macaroon Mix” by filling a quart-size jar with ingredients, using a wide-mouth funnel and premeasured ingredients. Recipe card will be included.

Anje will decorate quart-size jar and present other ideas for decorating jars for gifts. Idea: Frannie can bring 1/4 pint pepper jelly, pint tomato sauce jar, and pint pickle jar for Anje to decorate.

....Christmas Macaroon Mix Recipe – Cookie Mix in a Jar!

7 oz package of flaked coconut (2-2/3 cups)

2/3 cup sugar

½ cup chopped almonds, toasted

¼ cup all-purpose flour

¼ cup chopped dried cherries

2 tablespoons finely chopped candied orange peel

Note: Using a wide mouth funnel will make layering inside the jar a snap!

In a quart jar, layer the coconut, sugar, almonds, flour, salt, dried cherries, and candied orange peel; fasten lid. Include directions for making macaroons. Makes 1 jar (enough for 30 cookies).
