Evan Mackall, 10th grade, also won a Grand prize for his Great Sea Monkey Doomsday Experiment in which he tested the toxicity of several substances on brine shrimp. Travis McDaniel, Erik Peyton, and Eric Blacklock, all in 12th grade, won the team prize for their Molecular Madness experiment in which they generated oxygen and hydrogen gases using batteries, graphite rods and salt water. Grand prize-winners and runners-up won a variety of prizes and the opportunity to show off their brain power and meet other students with interests in science and engineering. Students who competed in this fair can now compete in the Sacramento Regional Science and Engineering Fair held the last week of March.

County whiz kids competed in the first
Amador Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at Argonaut High School.
The science fair was organized by teachers Kelsi Himmel and Donna Custodio for
junior and senior high school students to explore their interest in science
outside of the classroom. The Grand prize winners of this fair were Evan
Layher, 12th grade, for his World of Cards Experiment - he calculated the
number of atoms in the world and the number of different card combinations
possible in a deck of playing cards.
