The California secretary of state is urging voters to go through their 192-page voter information packet and fill out their sample ballots before heading to the polls Tuesday. There are 13 statewide propositions on the ballot, state offices from governor to state controller are up for grabs plus there are numerous local races including a supervisor’s seat, several city council seats and trustee positions on the Amador Count Unified School District Board and the Water Agency Board, as well as, and two local measures, K and L to be decided. Absentee ballots have already been pouring into county elections offices.

The weather, and speed combined with inattention to the roadway contributed to several accidents that occurred over the weekend. According to Officer Michael LeMaster’s report 25 year old Rebecca Carroll of Pioneer was driving west bound on Ridge Road at 6:40am at 55 miles per hour when she looked down at her passenger seat and allowed her 2001 Chevy to drift off the right shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle impacted a directional sign and fence. Carroll was not injured in the accident. That afternoon at 2:45 another accident occurred on Latrobe Road north of Lorentz Road. 

A recent California law entitled the Safely Surrendered Child Law allows for the voluntary surrender of a baby within 72 hours of birth. Under this law a parent or parent(s) can safely surrender their baby and be protected from prosecution for child abandonment. This law makes it easier for a parent who might otherwise abandon their baby in an unsafe place to have an alternate solution. The law allows a parent who is unable or unwilling to care for their baby to safely surrender the baby within three days of birth. All that is required is that the baby be given to an on-duty employee of a hospital or safe haven site in California. 

On Friday November 3, 2006 at approximately 8pm, the Amador County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a female victim who reported her husband, who was under the influence of prescription medication, had become enraged regarding their pending divorce and a relationship she had with a neighbor.  The woman said that her husband acquired a handgun from a hidden location under the residence and then pointed it to her head.  The victim reported that the firearm was loaded as she could see ammunition in the cylinder.  She stated her husband threatened to kill her, the neighbor and then himself. 

HRC Child Care Resources and the Amador County Child Abuse Prevention Council are hosting a free Child Safety Workshop on Thursday, November 9th, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The workshop will be held in the large conference room of the General Services Administration Building at 12210 B Airport Road, Jackson. This workshop is designed for anyone who cares for or works with kids and will include Child Abuse Mandated Reporter Training, as well as, a presentation on Shaken Baby Syndrome. Child Care Providers, babysitters, teens, parents, grandparents, and foster parents are encouraged to attend.

 

The Jackson Police Department in a partnership with the Historic Jackson Business Association is inviting all business owners and business employees in Jackson to join them for a town hall meeting on November 16th. The meeting to be held at the Jackson Civic Center will give citizens up to date information regarding crime alerts in the area and also offer crime prevention tips. Another subject to be discussed by local law enforcement will be Holiday Season crime trends and scams commonly seen. The meeting begins at 6pm at the civic center at 33 Broadway in Jackson 

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell has commented on the seventh annual independent evaluation of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). The evaluation for the school year 2005-06 was conducted by the Human Resources Research Organization (HumRRO) and is the first independent evaluation released since the CAHSEE became a graduation requirement, starting with the Class of 2006. "I am pleased that the findings of this evaluation indicate the Exit Exam is working as intended," said O’Connell. Among the findings of the HumRRO evaluation are: Dropout rates from tenth through twelfth grades have declined in the years since the CAHSEE requirement was established. Most twelfth graders in the Class of 2006 who still needed to meet the CAHSEE requirement continued to work hard throughout their senior year.

In August, a group of 32 doctors, nurses and lay volunteer from Amador County and Chicago traveled to Cartagena, Columbia to provide medical care, surgeries and medicine to needy families. The mission was coordinated by Global Medical Foundation (GMF). Among those affiliated with Sutter Amador Hospital (SAH) or our community who traveled to Cartagena were Mohammed Siddiqui, MD; Shanti Siddiqui, MD; Thomas Bowhay, MD; Dru Lewis, RN in the Medical/Surgical Dept. and Hazel Joyce, Board of Trustees member. Dr. Mohammed Siddiqui, surgeon and member of SAH’s medical staff, is also the president of GMF and one of its original founders. 

The Amador County Library System has announced Special November preschool story times at the Jackson Library. The hosted story times will be on Thursdays 10:30 - 11:00 except Thanksgiving Day.  Laurie of Laurie's Stories will tell stories, sing and play music on Nov. 9th & Nov. 30th. Ms. Tasha, our animated storyteller, will entertain the children on Nov. 16."
