Local Election Round Up Review

slide13Tomorrow is Election Day and here in Amador County Candidates are in the final stretches as are the proponents and opponents to two sales tax measures proposed for Amador County. Here is an overview of the races that will be decided tomorrow; In district 5 the supevisorial race between Mel Welch and Brian Oneto. For Amador County Unified School District Trustee in the Former Ione Unified School District Barry E. Franks, Terry Porray and Karl Knobelauch face off for the two seats available.

slide22Sacramento County sheriff's detectives have announced they are looking for a man who they believe may have information that could help in tracking down the person who killed Deputy Jeffrey Mitchell. And they are asking for help from the public. The identity of the man, whose photographs were captured on surveillance video at a Circle K market about an hour after the deputy was gunned down, "is of critical importance to detectives in the investigation," according to a news release issued by sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran.

Counterfeit Money Hits The Gold Country

slide26Funny money is making its way into the gold country. Recently, Tuolumne County Sheriff's investigators were notified that six counterfeit $100 bills ended up in Tuolumne County's daily bank deposit. Lt. Dan Bressler said that county employees Thursday compiled a short list of people they believe could have passed the counterfeit bills,  The Sheriff's Department was notified after the bogus bills were discovered in the county's Tuesday deposit at Westamerica Bank on Mono Way. "We are in the process of beginning to investigating" Bressler said.

Last Minute Polls Differ On National Races

slide28 Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic candidate Phil Angelides began their final push before Election Day over the weekend with campaign swings throughout the state. The goal; to rally supporters and encourage volunteers on last-minute get-out-the-vote drives. Angelides, who is trailing in the polls and has found it difficult to break free of Schwarzenegger's shadow, was received like a celebrity Saturday by hundreds of union members who were preparing to walk precincts. The state treasurer urged supporters not to get discouraged despite two recent public opinion polls that show him trailing the Republican incumbent by 16 and 18 percentage points.

Flu Shot Mercury Ban Lifted Due To Shortage

slide32California will waive its ban on mercury in children's flu shots for up to six weeks because of a vaccine shortage that has doctors turning away young patients, state health officials have announced. Kim Belshe, secretary of the state Health and Human Services Agency, said the administration continues to support a newly effective state law that bans a mercury-based preservative known as thimerosal from vaccines given to pregnant women and children younger than 3, however due to the shortage this temporary ban lift is necessary.

Sadam that began more than a year ago, a combative Hussein and two other defendants Sunday were sentenced to death by hanging for a brutal crackdown in 1982 in the Shiite town of Dujail. One other defendant was sentenced to life in prison, and three received 15-year sentences.
