About Preston Castle Foundation

The strikingly beautiful Romanesque style Preston Castle, on a hill in Ione, was actually the administration building for the Preston School of Industry, the first major attempt in California at rehabilitating, instead of just imprisoning, young offenders.  Opened in 1894, the Preston School of Industry became a leader in the juvenile prison reform movement by giving convicted boys a real chance at life by educating them not only in academics, but in all of the useful trades of the time.  Closed in 1960, when the Preston Youth Authority moved into a new administration building down the hill, the Preston Castle was left to deteriorate due to weather, vandalism, and general neglect.  It now serves as a vacant, but vitally important landmark for Ione, Amador County, and the Motherlode.  It is aCalifornia State Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Mission of the Preston Castle Foundation is to preserve, rehabilitate, and utilize the historic Preston Castle site.  This year we are pushing hard to obtain our own utility connections that will ultimately lead to acquiring the title to the property.  To help raise money for this important project, the Foundation sponsors several fund raising events throughout the year. The PCF is currently not allowed to bring guests inside the Castle, but outside events are permitted.  We continue to work with the State Fire Marshal on an acceptable solution as well as with our landlord, the State of California, to obtain the deed to the property.  Either of these events will allow guests inside the Castle.  If they do not occur in time, the Wine Tasting and Tour will be held entirely outside, utilizing the numerous shaded areas on the Castle grounds.

Purple Soldiers Run Again

Amador County (September 30, 2014)- Get out your neon and glow sticks and join Operation Care for the second annual Purple Soldier Neon Fun Run to raise awareness of domestic violence. This purposeful night-time event scheduled for the evening of Saturday, October 25th, is sponsored by the Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort, and will begin and end in the Parking Lot across from the Public Service Building on Dalton Road in Jackson. Registration will begin at 7:00 p.m. and the fun run starts at 8:00 p.m.

Why Purple Soldiers?

Every October, Operation Care places purple silhouettes in various locations throughout Amador County, representing local domestic violence victims and their stories of courage and hope. This year, the "Purple People" will come to life as victims and supporters walk/run together as Purple Soldiers against Domestic Violence. Participants will complete the run/walk in the dark using glow sticks, flashlights, and street lights. Runners, walkers, and observers are encouraged to decorate themselves with glow in the dark attire as well.

All participants pre-registering will receive a Purple Soldier t-shirt (while supplies last), wristband, and glow products in advance, so they may arrive in style. Pre-registration forms are available online at www.operationcare.org and at Operation Care's office, 619 New York Ranch Road in Jackson, or by clipping it from the Ledger Dispatch. Cost for the run/walk is $20.00 for adults or $35 for a Family Pack (includes 2 adults and unlimited children). Children under 18 are FREE. Anyone interested in volunteering for this exciting event should contact Anna at 209-223-2897. Sponsorships are also available.
