Backyard
composting is simple to explain; it is the controlled decomposition or break
down of organic material such as vegetable food waste, yard trimmings, and
grass clippings. Compost is created when the correct amount of
fresh organic waste is combined with aeration, water, and dry organic bulking
agents such as wood chips. Compost is the dark brown or
black finished product with a soil-like, earthy smell that can be used as a
soil amendment to grow healthy plants. The compost methods on public display at the
Interfaith Food Bank can be seen daily and visitors will learn from several different
composting techniques.
Composting
can be practiced in almost any backyard with composting bins either purchased
or constructed from scrap wood, wire fencing, or even old garbage cans. Compost “happens” even if you simply place yard and food waste in an open
pile, water periodically, and wait. Over
half of all waste materials that enter the landfill are considered to be
organic. Composting helps keep
this high volume of organic matter out of the landfill and turns what otherwise
would have been waste into a useful product.
Compost is excellent for gardens and landscaping and eliminates the need
for expensive soil conditioners, mulch, and fertilizer. The Amador County Waste
Management Department encourages the practice of the 5 R’s: REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE-REBUY-ROT.
