According to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department, the plane crashed in a rural field at approximately 9:15 am. Heavy wreckage was found near Pool Station Road and Highway 4, west of Angel’s Camp. Witnesses near the scene say they heard a loud crash and smoke and immediately called 911. At just after 10 am, Calaveras fire crews began to search the scene. Shortly after, search helicopters provided an aerial view and relayed the exact location of the crash to ground crews via radio. The pilot’s identity is not being released. According to the FAA website, the tail number of the plane is registered to Michael Monzingo of Oakdale, located in Stanislaus County. Sources later confirmed that Monzingo was the pilot of the plane. FAA Spokesman Ian Gregor said Monzingo was the only person on board. The pilot’s intended destination is currently unknown. It has since been confirmed that the plane was a fixed wing Cessna. Authorities are not releasing any other information at this time.
