Amador County Undersheriff Jim Wegner released details of the incident late Saturday, saying that at about 4:48 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, “Amador County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence on the 23000 block of Robin Road in Pioneer to a reported disturbance with shots fired” and two people possibly shot.

Deputies arrived moments later to find a 54-year-old female suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the neck, Wegner said. The victim reported that she resided at the residence with her father, William David Matz, 74. She reported that she had been in an argument with her father regarding his alcohol consumption.

The woman reported that her father became very angry, that he went to a room and obtained a firearm, Wegner said. The victim reported that her father shot at her several times, striking her once. The victim reported that after shooting her, Matz turned the firearm on himself. Deputies located Matz, deceased in the kitchen, with an apparently self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The victim was transported by American Legion Ambulance to a helicopter landing area, transferred to a helicopter, and transported to Mercy San Juan Hospital in Sacramento for treatment.

Amador County Sheriff’s Detectives processed the crime scene and are conducting follow up investigation into the shooting.
