Lions in a December letter to seniors said the speech contest is the “only way to be eligible” for the “Bert Smallfield Memorial Scholarship” of $5,000, open only to Argonaut High students. For all other Jackson Lions Scholarships awarded throughout the district, students do not need to win or place in the speech contest to earn the opportunity to apply for a scholarship, “you just need to make a speech on Jan. 30.”

The Preliminary Speech Contest will be judged by Assistant Superintendent Tim Zearly and two more impartial judges sought to assist. It has small cash awards for the top three contestants, and winners advance to the Jackson Lions Speech Contest, Feb. 6.

For the Preliminary Speech Contest, each interested student should prepare a 5-10 minute speech on the topic question: “What could the America of yesterday teach the America of tomorrow?”
