Hospice of Amador is a non-profit medical provider based in Jackson. Thirty paid staff and about 150 volunteers provide end-of-life services --medical care, family support, respite services, office work and more -- to the terminally ill of Amador, northern Calaveras, eastern San Joaquin and Sacramento Counties. Currently, the average patient count is at about 30. Services are funded through Medicare, other medical insurance, grants and local fundraising – notably by the Hospice of Amador Thrift Store in Jackson. How to increase visibility and services in Calaveras County is one project Riordan will be working on as executive director. Riordan said the board of directors of Hospice of Amador is close to changing the group’s name to Hospice of Amador and Calaveras, since about 1/3 of patients they serve are in Calaveras County. For now, though, he says he is spending time getting to know the people and financial ins and outs of the organization – when he has a better idea of the big picture, he can put his efforts where he says, he can do the most good.
