CalFire Looks To Busy Fire Season

Written by
slide21The combination of a dry winter, early weed and brush development and plenty of broken tree limbs on the ground have state and local fire officials urging people to clean up their property and establish their 100 feet of defensible space in advance of what they suspect will be a busy and early fire season. Defensible space is required by a state law mandating a 100-foot clearance around homes or clearance to the property line — whichever is greater. Typically, CDF's fire season starts in May. But last year, when the area was doused with plenty of rain, the season didn't start until June 5. It's been 30 years since a fire season started before the month of May
slide14CAL FIRE moved equipment and personnel to Southern California last week in anticipation of extreme fire danger posed by the combination of high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity. According to Tobie Edmonds Communications Officer with the CAL FIRE Prevention Bureau, the Amador/ El Dorado Unit of CAL FIRE has sent 3 Engines, 2 from Amador County and 1 from El Dorado County, as well as two Hand Crews from Pine Grove Camp,  two hand crews from Growlersburg Camp, 1 Engine from Nevada and 1 from Tulomne-Calaveras Unit, for a total of 86 people to the fire that was raging through Orange County, but is now contained. As a result of the recent fires CAL FIRE is reminding homeowners in areas susceptible to wildfire to protect their property with Defensible Space as required by state law. “By removing dead vegetation 100 feet from homes and following a few simple steps, homeowners can drastically increase their safety,” said Director Ruben Grijalva of CAL FIRE. “In California it is not a question of if a wildfire is going to occur, but more of a question of when.”
slide6Sutter Creek Police have been following every lead in the search for a subject that accosted a former girlfriend on Bryson Drive Saturday night.  According to police reports the Victim got out of her car in her garage. As she opened the garage door to head out towards her front door, the subject was standing there.  He then allegedly pushed her back into the garage, and according to the victim made all kinds of threats towards her. Sutter Creek Police have received several calls of sightings of the subject described as having longer hair in black pants and a green jacket. On Sunday evening the subject once again contacted the victim, this time by telephone, trying to find out what the victim had told the police.  The victim was able to get the phone number from where suspect was calling and gave that to the Sheriff’s Department dispatch.  From dispatch, the Sutter Creek PD was able to determine that the call was made from a pay phone at the Summit Center area located at the corner of Ridge Rd and Hwy 49.

House Fire In Jackson Last Evening

Written by

Last night around 5:30 pm a car fire was reported on Hwy 88 at Previtali Rd. That proved to be false alarm as the car was only overheating. As fire crews were cancelled on that call a second report of a fire, this time a structure fire, was reported. This was the real deal and The Jackson fire department assisted by CDF(Calfire), Amador Fire Protection District Battalion 10, and Sutter Creek Fire quickly brought the house fire on Bright Avenue to a quick. The structure seemed intact, but there seemed to be heavy damage inside. There were no reported injuries.

Mule Creek Remains On Lockdown

Written by

slide11.jpgMule Creek State Prison remains in partial lockdown in the wake of an attack on prison guards last Thursday at the Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, north of Los Angeles. Two Hispanic gang-affiliated inmates rushed three guards and stabbed them, putting them in the hospital, officials said. The mandatory lockdown is part of a statewide operation and a standard procedure to avoid gang repercussions. All state prisons were locked down as a precaution.

slide12.jpgAs of  yesterday, Mule Creek’s lockdown was still in effect for roughly 1,100 Hispanic inmates, or almost 32 percent of the prison’s population. The Tehachapi victims, two sergeants and an officer, remain stable in the hospital. The two inmates are affiliated with Southern California prison gangs. Certain State prisons will remain locked down until corrections staff can determine whether the stabbing was isolated. Tehachapi prison was built to hold about 2,800 inmates but had about 5,900 as of last year, according to the Department of Corrections Web site. Its custody staff numbers about 1,400. In April 2005, two Tehachapi guards were stabbed by a prisoner using a homemade weapon, but both recovered. State corrections officials said the Tehachapi prison will remain on lockdown indefinitely. Bad Day For Big Rigs On Amador County Roads

Written by
Amador County saw its fair share of big rig problems yesterday. Around 9:30 am this double hauler moved too close to the edge of Climax Rd approaching Highway 88 and its rear trailer, literally, fell off of the roadway. Yesterday afternoon a hay hauler also lost its rear trailer causing about a 35 minute closure of one lane of Hwy 88. The mess was cleaned up and the truck, with an expired registration out of Nevada, was impounded. A drama of another sort also played itself out on Hwy 88 yesterday when law enforcement received calls about a vehicle passing in an unsafe manner near Cook’s Station, with the driver flashing a badge and a gun at other drivers.
slide32Emergency meetings being held in Tahoe to address the current emergency situation are revealing anger. That anger aimed squarely at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency or TRPA. In all, a crowd of nearly 2,000 people gathered at the South Tahoe Middle School auditorium Monday night, wanting to be heard after the losses from the Angora Fire. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is considered a powerful bi-state environmental land use agency that charged with managing the resources of the Tahoe Basin area for both California and Nevada. Even the name of the agency brought scorn and jeers according to officials in attendance.
