There have already been some changes announced to the Amador County Fair for this year and one of those is the return of the Miss Amador Pageant to Thursday night, the opening night of the fair. This year there will be six candidates for the crown taking the stage at 8pm on Thursday July 26th at the Bandstand, known as the Central House Stage.

Are you a fan of the Discovery Channel’s number one show-a crab fishing series, The Deadliest Catch?- Well if you are hooked like the rest of America and think you recognize the Capt. Of the Wizard- new to the show this season- you are not mistaken. The Capt and first mate are Amador County natives that attended Plymouth Elementary School. Keith Colburn of Redmond, Wash., has served at the helm of the Wizard for the last 14 years. His brother Monte Colburn is also an experienced deck hand who takes over as skipper for the last half of crab season.

This week 30 cage fighters weighed in at the Jackson Rancheria for last night’s popular Global Knockout. The event was completely sold out weeks ago. The fighters, fans and promoters are all pumped up and ready for the highly anticipated show. After the popularity of the last two events it is sure to return at the Jackson Rancheria.

Additional softball field access in Ione will be the subject of an agenda item on the Amador County Unified School District’s agenda next Wednesday night. Currently, Amador County little league west controls all baseball fields in Howard park, two of which were specifically designed for softball when they were constructed. According to city officials the city has an agreement for use with Amador County Little League West which grants the little league first right of refusal for usage of the fields based on the agreement which specifies that the ACLLW will provide maintenance and improvements at the park. The softball program, last season, began working with the city for greater field access and now the school district, at the request of the Amador County Recreation Agency may become part of the solution to an ongoing problem.

Tis the season to be generous and that is exactly what was happening as 40-50 motorcycles roared into Kit Carson, a Jackson area nursing home. Russ and Linda Knight, owners of The Knight’s Motorcycle shop in Plymouth, championed the drive and arrived with members of several clubs, two of which were the Messengers and Knight rides. All riders brought gift items to the residents of the home, bringing some additional cheer to the lives of the elderly.

 

According to the AP, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will propose "full family sanctions" and other tough-love measures to encourage hundreds of thousands of state welfare recipients back to work, his administration said Sunday. The proposal is aimed at avoiding stiff federal penalties and balancing the state's budget. The idea is to hit parents receiving welfare from the state's CalWORKS program who don't meet work requirements. Those parents could face shrinking monthly checks and other reduced benefits for their entire families this year if lawmakers accept the plan, which aims to bring California in compliance with federal guidelines and cut state costs by $465 million annually. Currently, California is far behind other large states in reaching federal targets, which require 50 percent of single parents on welfare to work 30 hours a week, and adults in two-parent homes to work 30 to 55 hours a week.

Jackson Creek Dental Group will once again open their office to treat children, at no cost, who “fall between the cracks” in healthcare – children who would not otherwise receive dental treatment – on Saturday, February 3, 2007 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  The doctors and their staff have provided this service to the community on a volunteer basis for the past 22 years.  Patients who meet the criteria will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. To qualify for treatment, children must be 2-18 years of age, qualify for free or reduced fee school lunches, WIC or CHDP, be a resident of Amador or Calaveras County, and they must not be covered by private dental insurance.

Sutter Amador Hospital announces the birth of the first baby born in Amador County in 2007, Quaidin Jerry Gutierrez. Parents Jennifer and John Ray Gutierrez happily welcomed their new son into the world on Tuesday, January 2nd at 6:36 p.m. Even though he was born a month early, Quaidin Jerry was born weighing a healthy 5 lbs 2 oz and measuring 17-1/2 inches in length.
