On September 12, 2012 at approximately 0116 hours, Amador County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a residence on French Gulch Road in Pine Grove for the report of a possibly intoxicated, suicidal subject. Upon arrival to the scene, a deputy advised that the subject had left the scene minutes prior driving a grey Dodge Durango. An Amador County Sheriff's Sergeant subsequently observed the Dodge Durango stopped on Hwy 88 near Sugar Loaf Road. Upon seeing the marked Amador County Sheriff's Unit approach, the Durango sped off and attempted to evade the patrol unit. The Durango subsequently yielded on Irishtown Road at Clinton Road. As the Sheriff Sergeant began to exit his vehicle, the driver's door of the Durango opened and the barrel of a shotgun was pointed out of the vehicle towards the ground. The occupant of the vehicle refused to obey directions to drop the firearm and show his hands. The Sheriff's Sergeant continued to give directions to the occupant and ultimately engaged him in preliminary negotiations wherein the Sheriff's Sergeant was able to articulate some past interactions he had had with the subject. The subject ultimately agreed to unload the firearm, and subsequently threw the firearm from the vehicle. The subject eventually exited the vehicle and after an initial period of continued refusals to comply with the Sheriff's Sergeant's orders, he ultimately submitted to arrest. CHP assisted Amador County Sheriff's Deputies with clearing the Dodge Durango. The subject, David Thomas Souza, 33, of Pine Grove was arrested and transported to Sutter Amador Hospital for medical clearance. Souza was booked into the Amador County Jail charged with exhibiting a firearm in the presence of a peace officer; possession of a loaded firearm in a public place, and resisting or obstructing a peace officer. Amador County Mental Health was also notified.
