A major pump that delivers water from the Mokelumne River to AWA's upcountry water treatment plant has failed and was shut down last night, said General Manager Gene Mancebo in an announcement today.
The nature of the failure of the Silver Lake Pines pump station is not yet known. Mancebo said AWA personnel were called out in the middle of the night on Sunday and found water spraying out of the pump can.
This may require that the entire pump and motor be removed. At this point, we don't know how long it will take to get this pump repaired,'" said Mancebo.
Currently, only one of the three pumps at the Silver Lake Pines Pump Station is operating and the Agency is now forced to run it all day and night to meet the water demand. This smaller pump, which was damaged by the last electrical storm, can only run on a manual mode.
The communication controls for all pumps at Silver Lake Pines and Tiger Creek were damaged by last month's lighting storms and Agency crews have not been able to repair the problem. The lightning damage is complicating the Agency's ability to control when and how much water is delivered to the Buckhorn Water Treatment Plant.
"We are not yet asking customers to conserve," said Mancebo. "Right now we are making enough water to meet the upcountry demand by running the pump 24 hours a day, but I'm concerned that this hot weather may increase the demand -- and if anything at all fails with our one last pump, we will not be able to get water to the treatment plant and then we will be looking at a real problem without water. October is normally when the worst fires occur and we don't want to be in a position of no water."
Mancebo said he will keep local media informed if there is a need for conservation as more information becomes available. Story by press release, edited by Tom Slivick, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
