Pickets are in place at the local Raley’s Supermarket Store in Jackson. The picketers are out in mass this morning approximately 12 picketers were on scene. Two at corner of the Hwy 49 signal light. Several more at the stores parking entrances and a group picketing and sitting at an information station set up at the store entrance.
The picket lines were civil and striking employees were seen talking to and addressing the stores customers about their Plight. About 7,500 Employees and Union members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 5 went on strike agnest the Sacramento based Raley's and Nob Hill workers go on strike over pay benefits, The Sacramento-based company says it needs to cut costs due to the heightened competition in the grocery business. According to Raley’s spokesman John Segale, The Company made its best offer four weeks ago and received no response. The new contract would freeze the pay for two years. And eliminate premium pay for Sundays and Holidays although Sunday shifts would still pay double time. After talks with a federal mediator broke down, Raley’s unilaterally put forward a new contract Sunday. Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 5 spokesman Ron Lind said. "This is an unfair labor practices strike," he said. "The company is bargaining in bad faith, intimidating and interrogating members." While Raley’s spokesman contends that the Union did not bring the Final and Best Offer up for a vote with its members.
