In total the fire is 44 percent contained at 3100 acres. The good news is that yesterday no homes or structures were burned and no firefighters or personnel were seriously injured, although there was a close call for 2 US Forest Service firefighters that were forced to take shelter in their special fire tents in the middle of a grassy meadow. The fire fighters remained under their tents for about 25 minutes until they were told it was safe to exit the emergency shelter. Highway 50 is closed in the South Lake Tahoe area to all but outbound traffic. Incoming traffic was being turned around at the California-Nevada border and at Twin Bridges. Highway 89 was closed from the junction with Highway 50 north to Emerald Bay.
