Mill Fire Investigation Steps Up With Arrival Of National Team
The investigation into last Friday morning’s
catastrophic fire at the old Georgia Pacific mill site in Martell continues
with some high powered help. According to Amador Fire Protection District’s
Chief Jim McCart after he evaluated the situation last Friday and Saturday he
determined that the scope of the “fire cause investigation” exceeded the
capabilities of our local fire investigators.
“We are good at investigations of single family dwelling fires” he says
“179,000 square foot buildings will require some assistance”
states McCart. And assistance we now have. On Saturday afternoon McCart contacted the
Regional Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms office and three investigators responded
that day. By Sunday help was arriving in the form of a Regional Agency
Coordinator from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives and that’s when the decision was made to activate a
national response team- due to the size and complicated nature of the fire
scene. By Monday a total of 23 fire
investigation specialists from around the nation had arrived here in the
county, complete with all their equipment, expertise and a K-9 unit as well.
Chief McCart says that the specialties of the investigators include chemical
analysis, electrical, general fire cause investigations and K-9 handlers. Even
with such a large group of specialists says McCart the investigation will be
complicated and time consuming as the fire scene examination and investigation
are anticipated to continue for some time. McCart also explains that this
massive investigation effort is absolutely free to the county. This
investigative team is funded through state tax dollars
