CHP Reminds Motorists to be Careful During the Labor Day Weekend
Labor Day weekend traditionally marks the end of
summer and before the celebration begins, the Amador Unit of the California
Highway Patrol (CHP) wants to remind Amador county motorists to plan ahead,
designate a driver, and wear their seat belts.. According to CHP Community
Outreach Officer John C Hardey last year, 29 people were killed on California
roads over the Memorial Day weekend and although Amador County
experienced only 3 accidents last year on the holiday weekend, this year’s
statistics can not be compared to last year.
Already on the roadways we have had 12 deaths
related to 10 vehicle collisions. Officer Hardey states that “We had slowed down some, but if this
last week is any indication we are on track for a record year for collision
numbers.” Hardey says that “Last year, in August, we had 48 collisions. Currently, we have recorded
46 this August, with four of those reported on Wednesday of this week”. However, one thing is for sure, says Hardey, the CHP will have a strong
enforcement presence all weekend long.” The holiday weekend is a Maximum
Enforcement Period (MEP) for the CHP.
This means all available officers will be on duty from 6 p.m. on Friday,
May 25 through midnight on Monday, May 28. Hardey states that because DUI
related accidents and DUI related arrests are up in the county significantly
this year all local law enforcement agencies will be on the look out for any
signs of an impaired driver on the roadways, and the waterways as well. Hardey states that drivers should
plan ahead and have a great time this weekend. “Slow down and relax” he adds
