Signatures Certified on Referendum Petitions Against Jackson Hills

The Amador County Elections office has certified that a qualifying 234 signatures were gathered on two referendum petitions against the proposed Jackson Hills Golf Community project.  The signature drive, organized by a group called “Concerned Citizens of Jackson” calls for a city vote on rescinding Jackson City Council’s certification of the Jackson Hills EIR and approval of a General Plan amendment that would change the land use designation from agricultural to Residential Single. At their next city council meeting on Nov. 13, Jackson City Council will consider the options of rescinding their previous votes on Jackson Hills, or sending the issue to Jackson voters.

The earliest that vote could take place is June 2008 – in the meantime, city negotiations with New Faze Development on a Development Agreement can continue, but the city is prohibited from making any final approvals on the project until the referendum vote. In a letter to the city, Judith Jebian, spokesperson for Concerned Citizens of Jackson said, “After personally contacting so many people who are against the Jackson Hills project, we are convinced that the people of Jackson will not vote in favor of your resolutions approving the EIR and the general plan amendment for Jackson Hills.”

Responding to Jebian’s criticisms of the Council’s decisions on Jackson Hills, Jackson Mayor Drew Stidger told TSPN in an earlier interview that he stands behind his decisions on Jackson Hills and will not change his votes.  “I have been contacted by many who have told me that the City Council has been doing a very good job regarding this matter and have been pleased with the decisions we have been making. I will not vote to repeal the resolutions, because a group of people, some of who do not even live within the City of Jackson, rallied together and obtained signatures for the referendums. It is my belief that if the people of Jackson feel that strongly, either for or against the Jackson Hills Golf Course Community, then let the people be heard at the poll.” If voters turn down Jackson Hills in a referendum election, New Faze would need to wait one year before continuing the approval process on the Jackson Hills project.
