Supervisor Brian Oneto read the resolution, saying “Newell raised more than $3,000 in cash and acquired more than $2,500 in material donations and recruited 45 volunteers of all ages to help with the project, spending countless hours to complete the project.” Oneto said he is now an Eagle Scout, and should be a U.S. Marine. The resolution congratulated Newell on his achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

Newell is an 11-year scout with Troop 447 in the Amador District, of the Golden Empire Council of Boy Scouts of America. His Eagle Scout project was to build new concrete tables and replace existing table tops for Fiddletown Park, including six additional benches, a drinking fountain, a barbecue pit and a new sign board for the park.

Newell thanked Oneto for making a donation to the project and Amador County Recreation Agency Executive Director Tracey Towner for getting the project’s approval. Newell said he had great community support, and he received his Eagle Scout award on Sunday at the Ione Fire Department.

Towner said Newell rebuilt the concrete tables, added new table tops, and added 10 more benches, with the finished project making it the best refurbished park in Amador County. She said “he spent hundreds of hours, literally,” working on the project.

Towner in a report to the Board said Newell’s “complete overhaul of Fiddletown Park picnic area” included he and his crew making nine table tops, seats for 10 tables, and six extra benches for basketball and tennis courts. He added a drinking fountain, barbecue pit and billboard.

Towner said “he led 45 volunteers, beginning July 31, completing the project on Sept. 11. During that time,” Newell “spent almost every daylight hour, including the four-day weekend around Labor Day, working on the project.”

Because it was not on the agenda, the Supervisors voted 5-0 to approve the resolution for Newell.
