Amador County – Sutter Creek Police Chief Brian Klier reported to the Sutter Creek City Council last week that his department has received a $3,500 matching grant to purchase new ballistic vests.
Klier said the 50-50 grant means the city will have to match the amount to make the purchase. City Manager Sean Rabe said there were funds already in the budget for the purchase.
The lifespan of each vest is five years, Klier said, and knowing that the expiration was approaching for the Sutter Creek Police Department’s vests, he applied in July for the grant from the Department of Justice. He said he was notified Oct. 14 that the department had received the grant, which, with the city’s match, will purchase nine new vests for the department.
Mayor Pro Tempore Linda Rianda said she continues to hear comments of support for the police officers’ presence in Sutter Creek. Mayor Tim Murphy and Councilwoman Sandy Anderson agreed.
Klier also gave a department activity report for September, saying there was 462 service calls by SCPD, including 412 initiated by officers. There were 116 vehicle stops, three felony arrests, and three juvenile arrests. One of the latter included a youth arrested for having a knife at school He said the student accidentally brought the knife to school.
He said there were no calls to report domestic violence and no calls reporting child abuse in September, and those were numbers he would take any time.
