2 Arrested For Arson in Gilroy

slide11.png Police in Gilroy arrested two men for arson, burglary and vehicle theft in connection with a crime spree that included a burglary and high speed chase in Amador County in mid-October. According to a story in the Gilroy Dispatch newspaper, Joseph Uvalles, 21 and Robert Cuevas, 32, were arrested Thursday after the Santa Clara County Crime Lab confirmed that DNA evidence linked them to a fire at a Gilroy Budget Rental Car location. They are suspected of burning the car rental office and making off with 2007 Ford F150 last October, Gilroy police detective Mitchell Madruga said.

Uvalles was arrested by Amador County sheriff's deputies the day after the Oct. 16 burglary while driving the rental truck. Uvalles was spotted in the stolen truck by sheriff’s deputies near Prospect Motors in Martell. He then led police in a high speed chase into Calaveras County where he finally rolled the pick-up. He was arrested at the scene for auto theft, possession of stolen property, evading a peace officer and being an unlicensed driver. A search of the stolen truck revealed burglary tools and stolen property from Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Martell. Gilroy police told the Amador County Sheriff’s office at the time that they believed the truck was connected to the Budget Rental Car arson. The rental agency fire completely destroyed the building. Both Cuevas and Uvalles were in the custody of other law enforcement agencies when Gilroy police arrested them. The Gilroy Dispatch contributed to this story.
