This past holiday weekend was a busy one on roadways, both here in the county and statewide.

slide2The California Highway Patrol is reporting a total of 29 people were killed in traffic accidents statewide over the holiday weekend. That's down from 42 deaths last year during the same period, from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Saturday 11:30 AM with drunk-driving arrests up, climbing to 1,016 from last year's total of 1,003. Locally, roadways were wet, icy and snow covered as local law enforcement and emergency services responded to multiple ACCIDENTS on Hwy 88 in the upcountry areas.

slide3This Head on crash occurred on an icy curve on Hwy 88 and sent 4 people to the hospital.  One victim was flown out by helicopter and three others were taken out by American Legion ambulance. The key contributing factor was the slick icy patch on the curve where the white car, a Porsche, lost control and collided with the Jeep. Accidents continued through out the weekend and last night. The winter storm warning continues through noon today meaning roadways will continue to be treacherous. Remember the CHP’s advice: Always check road conditions, slow down, buckle up and avoid driving icy, snowy roads if possible.
