slide4THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS AND REHABILITATION IS NOW SAYING THAT IT OVER-ESTIMATED THE NUMBER OF PAROLED SEX OFFENDERS THAT ARE BEING REQUIRED TO MOVE UNDER THE TERMS OF JESSICA’S LAW. PAROLEES THAT FAIL TO RELOCATE, BECAUSE THE NEW LAW REQUIRES A GREATER BUFFER BETWEEN SEX OFFENDERS AND SCHOOL, PARKS AND CHURCHES, RISK VIOLATING THE TERMS OF THEIR PAROLE AND BEING SENT BACK TO PRISON.

THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS AND REHABILITATION PREVIOUSLY SAID IT NOTIFIED 2,700 PAROLEES THAT THEY HAD 45 DAYS TO RELOCATE BECAUSE OF JESSICA'S LAW. BUT OFFICIALS NOW SAY NEARLY A THOUSAND OF THEM ARE EITHER MISSING, DEAD, BACK IN CUSTODY, HAVE COMPLETED THEIR PAROLE, OR AREN'T REALLY SEX OFFENDERS. THE NEW ACCOUNTING LEAVES 1,700 PAROLEES WHOM THE DEPARTMENT BELIEVES ARE IN VIOLATION OF THE LAW. JESSICA'S LAW BARS SEX OFFENDERS FROM LIVING WITH 2,000 FEET OF A PARK OR SCHOOL. IT WAS PASSED OVERWHELMINGLY BY VOTERS IN NOVEMBER, 2006.
