slide17Summer is the time for lazy days, warm evenings, county fairs and carnivals. In rural communities throughout the nation, the Fair is the biggest event of the summer and it is no different for Amador County. And this is the week- the Amador County Fair officially opens Thursday with kids day and seniors day.

The fair is for everyone and not only do residents display their talents in the exhibits and livestock shows, they make use of the Fair for a variety of efforts.  The Amador County Library, the Rec Department, the Argonaut Class of '92, and the Master Gardeners all join a number of service clubs to take advantage of the thousands of visitors who attend the Fair. The Amador County Library plans to read fun-filled Western-themed stories on Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 pm. Master Gardener, Michael Spinetta, will share his butterfly garden at the Plymouth Elementary School, just steps from the Fair office, with guided tours each  morning. The Sierra Gold Quilters and the Motherlode Quilt Guild will demonstrate their fine art in stitchery and the Del Oro Spinners and Weavers will demonstrate a variety of fiber art.

slide24 Talented vocalists and musicians will perform for the chance to go on to regional and state competitions in the Colgate Country Showdown on Saturday and the Amador Idol Contest on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Amador Choraliers and the Gold Country Barbershop Quartet, already accomplished musicians, plan to entertain you. Thinking outside the box, the Argonaut Class of '92 has planned an all-grad reunion on Sunday for any high school graduates in the county.  They realized that the Amador County Fair is where friends and family catch up with each other once a year.  During the reunion, they will compile class address books for future reference. Several service clubs put in long and hard hours working at the Fair, earning money to support a variety of community programs.  The Jackson Rotary plans and operates the annual Destruction Derby.  The Jackson Lions serve beer. The FFA staffs a food booth.  The Amador County Wine Grape Growers Association will hold the annual Wine Tasting.  They all put money back into the community. The Amador County Fair will celebrate "Bumper Cars, Rodeo Stars & Ewe," July 26-29. For more information, please visit amadorcountyfair.com or call (209) 245-6921.
