Snow in the mountains overnight and temperatures in Jackson down to 30 degrees Sunday night has skiers and snowboarders looking up the mountain, wondering when Kirkwood will open. Kirkwood received 5 inches of snow in the last storm for a total of 12 – 20” so far this season. Kirkwood usually opens in mid-November -- this year the scheduled opening day is November 24, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Kirkwood’s elevation starting at 7800 feet and rising 2000 feet to 9800 makes it known for getting more snow than any other resort in the Tahoe region. The resort averages 638 inches of snow in a season –but last year, only got a little more than half that at 376 inches of snow. Communications Manager Daniel Pistoresi says the resort managers are optimistic about the Thanksgiving weekend opening, with snowmaking machines full-time and more new snow forecast this weekend. Pistoresi says Kirkwood is offering a number of new activities and events including a new skier/boarder Cross country course open to the public, a Tahoe Adventure Film Festival and new environmental initiatives including a Carpool Forum where skiers can conserve energy, save gas money, help reduce traffic, and receive Kirkwood rewards and incentives. For current snow conditions, ticket and event information go to www.kirkwood.com.
