Low-income tax filers and
seniors can get expert help with filling out their tax returns – for free. The
IRS and AARP sponsor the nationwide Tax Aide program where trained volunteers
prepare and electronically file tax returns at no cost. According to Senior
Center Director Laurie Webb, the local volunteers, many of who are retired
business professionals, are trained by the IRS and the Franchise Tax Board.
Webb also said to remind
viewers that this service is not just for seniors – it’s also for low – to
moderate-income folks as well. She said many young people take advantage of the
service provided by these experienced volunteers. Beginning February 4th and running through tax
season until April 15th, the service will be available Mondays,
Tuesdays and Thursdays in Jackson at the Amador Senior
Center, in Ione at the Cornerstone Church, and in Pioneer at the Church of
the Cross. In some cases, disabled people can make arrangements to
complete their taxes over the phone. You must make an appointment to set a time
and location to meet with a tax volunteer
-- To make an
appointment, call the Senior
Center at 223-0442.
Donations are appreciated, but this is a free service.
