Fate of the Old Buscaglia Building Discussed at Jackson City Council
Written by
Not on the agenda, but of great concern was the historic significance of the old Buscaglia building
on Jackson Gate Road.
Members of the public expressed concern about the demolition of the historic
building, and appealed to the city council that measures be taken with the
current owners of the property to preserve it.
Plans for demolition of the building were
submitted by the owners in October 2006. Last month, after reviewing the
results of the Site Plan Review Committee, the Jackson Planning Commission
voted to not subject the project to CEQA. Current plans are to replace the near
80-year-old building with parking space. Among those expressing concern was Amador County author and archivist Larry Cenotto, who
validated the building’s historical value, and said that tearing down the
building for parking space was “blatantly
wrong.” Cenotto also said that
“if the city is responsible for preserving its future, it must look to it by
surveying the city’s historical resources, and protecting those that the
community decides must be preserved.” The possibility of establishing Jackson Gate Road
as a historical district was also suggested by Cenotto and other members of the
public.
