A new Ione Police Chief will be sworn in
tonight. Michael L. Johnson
and K-9 officer Hawk will officially join the Ione Police Department when they
are sworn in by the Ione City Council tonight at their regular council
meeting. Johnson was one of 23 candidates for the job and was selected from six
applicants who made it as far as the interview process. Johnson was recommended
by Ione City Manager Kim Kerr, who worked with Johnson in her previous position
in Eureka.
Johnson last worked for 12 years at the Eureka
Police Department as sergeant, swat team member and K-9 officer. Johnson is
bringing with him to the Ione Police Department, Hawk, a narcotics detecting
Labrador retriever. The Ione P.D. is purchasing Hawk for $6,200 from the Eureka
Police Department. Johnson, who moved his family to Ione just before Christmas,
will be replacing interim police chief Bob Olson. Also on tonight’s City
Council agenda is an update on the fire station construction, a staff
recommendation to change life insurance companies for Ione City
employees, an update to the council on recruitment of a street and park
maintenance worker and setting a date for a special meeting on Bicycle and Pedestrian Pathways. The City council meeting will start at 6 pm
tonight at Ione City Hall.
