Thanks to a quick thinking employee and an arrest by the Amador County Sheriff’s Office a burglary suspect was captured and an unsolved burglary case in Modesto solved. On Monday November 5, at approximately 6:15 am, the Amador County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting a burglary at the Cemex Plant at 6080 Jackson Valley Road in Ione.  The caller reported that a female subject wearing dark clothing was observed hiding in the bushes near the plant.  The female subject reportedly fled the area after being approached by Cemex Plant personnel, but before the subject fled, one of the employees was able to photograph the female with his cellular telephone.

One deputy responded to the scene, while a second deputy checked the surrounding area.  At the intersection of Jackson Valley Road and Buena Vista Road, a deputy contacted and detained a female who matched the description of the female that fled from the Cemex Plant.  Upon contacting the subject she admitted to being at the Cemex Plant, but denied committing any crimes.  However, search of the woman revealed items including wire cutters, pliers, antiseptic wipes and some blank checks from a construction company in Modesto. Upon investigating the scene, deputies found wire cutters had been used to cut two sets of welding leads/cables from a welder on the property.  The leads were valued at approximately $500.00.  The cables were subsequently recovered in the area the female had been seen hiding.  Foot prints matching the soles on the female’s shoes were located around the welder and in the area where the leads were recovered.  Further investigation revealed that entry had also been forced into two storage trailers on the property.

Plant employees had not determined if anything was missing, however they did note that items of value had been moved from the rear of the trailers to the front near the doors.  Personnel from the Cemex Plant positively identified the detained subject and identified the pliers and antiseptic wipes as being stolen from the plant.  Upon contacting the construction company in Modesto, it was determined that they too had been the victim of a burglary, wherein the checks were stolen.  The Modesto Police Department was notified of the recovery of the stolen checks.   Amador County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Mary Jane Crago, 29, of Fiddletown and charged her with burglary, grand theft, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools and being under the influence of a controlled substance.  Crago’s bail was set at $20,000.00.
