It has been 14 years since Tobacco Reduction of Amador County (TRAC) conducted the first youth purchase survey to determine whether clerks would sell tobacco products to minors. This latest survey showed that youth are still able to purchase tobacco in local stores within our county. When we talk with youth, most will tell us it is easy to purchase tobacco. They all know what stores to go to and who will sell to them. Youth access to tobacco is everyone’s concern and the solution is for all of us as a community to make it difficult for youth to purchase tobacco in Amador County. Let merchants and clerks know that you support them in their efforts to reduce sales to minors by not selling tobacco products to our youth. Report illegal sales to the STAKE ACT number, 1-800-5-ASK-ID. The law requires that this number be posted at all cash registers where tobacco products are sold. Contact TRAC at 223-6638 for more information.
