slide2 Yesterday afternoon around 5:15 pm a collision that occurred on Hwy 88 on Hurricane Hill near Sunset drive took the life of one person, injuring 4 others. The collision occurred between a pickup truck and a van after a third vehicle caused the wreck and then fled the scene. Jennet Mumphrey of Stockton was eastbound on Hwy 88 east of Eggiman Lane in the passing lane when the unknown driver passed Mumphrey on the right cutting her off as the lanes merged together. In order to avoid hitting the unknown driver, Mumphrey swerved left and in the process lost control of her vehicle. Mumphrey’s 1993 Ford then slid across the roadway into the westbound lane and was struck broadside by Corby Wallace of Jackson. The impact of the collision sent both vehicles onto the right hand shoulder of west bound 88 with Mumphrey colliding into a barbed wire fence. The unknown driver then fled the scene.

slide6Mumphrey had only minor injuries, but a 75 year old female passenger from Stockton in Mumphrey’s car was declared dead at the scene and a second passenger, 64 year old Mark Stebbins of Stockton was transported to Westover Field for airlift by Reach 2 to UC Davis Medical Center. Corby Wallace was transported to Sutter Amador Hospital, along with her passenger Lindsay Antonicchio 23, of Jackson, both with major injuries. The fatal victim of the accident has not yet been identified by the CHP. A Be on the Look Out was issued by the CHP for a small silver SUV that had caused the accident but failed to stop at the scene. Investigating Officer Brandon Hallam said the CHP is conducting an investigation and is following up on received leads. He said that any help from the public would be greatly appreciated as witnesses have indicated that there were others who stopped at the scene and left before the CHP arrived that could have further information in the identification of the car or driver that left the scene.

slide7 According to CHP Public Information Officer Craig Harmon- even though this driver is a non-contact party- because his vehicle was not involved collision, the driver still had a duty to stop at the scene of the accident. Harmon explains that under vehicle code 20001 any driver involved in a collision, even if considered a non-contact involved party, must stop at the scene. The CHP is encouraging the driver to contact the CHP because according to Harmon, there is a possibility that he driver is unaware of the accident he caused. Harmon indicates that If you have any information about the accident contact the CHP at 223-4890.  This accident is the 9th fatal collision of the year now accounting for 11 fatalities on Amador County roadways.
