El Dorado National Forest: What’s Open, What’s Not, Where You Can Drive and Much More
Written by
For the El Dorado national Forest and those that
recreate therein the Memorial Weekend marks the start of the summer recreation season. With drier
than normal conditions in the forest, campgrounds below 7,000 feet will
be open for the big weekend. The
high elevation campgrounds at Wrights Lake, Woods Lake, and Kirkwood
Lake will not be open.
The Eldorado National
Forest remains under a 2005 court order that restricts
motorized vehicle travel to routes identified on the Motorized Vehicle
Restriction Map which is available free of charge from all Eldorado National Forest
offices.
For those visitors planning to camp outside of
developed campgrounds your vehicle must be parked on a system route or within a
reasonable distance of the route so as not to block the roadway, create a
safety hazard, or damage vegetation. Forest
Supervisor Ramiro Villalvazo says that “People have done a great job
adjusting to the new restrictions over the past two years,” said Villalvazo.
“Visitors have generally
responded well to the restrictions as we continue to help them understand how
to comply. However, when violations of the restrictions occur we will issue
citations.” Campers are asked to be very careful with their campfires as
the forest is much drier than usual for this time of year. Campfires are allowed at this time
outside of developed campgrounds if a valid California Campfire permit is in
possession and the permit conditions are met. Mormon Emigrant Trail is
open as of yesterday. Have a safe and fun weekend.
