CAL FIRE Breaks Work
The California Department of Forestry and Fire
Protection (CAL FIRE) will join officials from the Tahoe Donner Homeowner’s Association to
discuss how a cooperative fuels reduction project played a critical role in
stopping the recent “80 Fire.” Near Highway 80 and Donner Lake.
Many of these types of breaks have been built in Amador County
through the efforts of the Amador Fire Safe Council.
These shaded fuel breaks were constructed in the Pioneer/Volcano area,
and near Pine Acres through various federal and state grant programs.. The
“80 Fire” started near Interstate 80 and the Donner Lake Interchange and
quickly advanced upslope toward the 6,000 plus homes in the Tahoe/Donner
Subdivision. As the fire approached the subdivision, it burned into an existing
fuel break and was stopped. The fuel break was established over several years
and implemented thru the Tahoe/Donner and Truckee Fire District fuel reduction
programs. CAL FIRE has provided support to these programs for the last several
years thru the California Forest Improvement Program (CFIP) and the Proposition
40 Fuels Reduction Program. Projects like the Tahoe Donner Fuel Break,
and the local projects here in Amador
County sponsored by the
Amador Fire Safe Council, are designed to encourage landowners to create
defensible space and to protect communities from costly and damaging
fires.
