City of Plymouth Update

Thursday, the Plymouth city council held a public hearing to receive input on a proposed capital improvement plan for fiscal years 2008-2012. City Engineer Roark Webber informed the council that this plan, if adopted, does not authorize the city to construct any of the improvements but it is a commitment from the council to complete the projects after obtaining proper funding. Webber told the council that a large number of the projects in the capital improvement plan are paid for by developer fees. City streets and intersections which are planned for improvement include: several parts of Main Street, including its intersection with state highway 49.

That project is estimated to cost $1,200,000 alone. Several sections of Empire St. Mill St. and Poplar street are also planned to undergo improvements. The estimated cost of improving streets and intersections for Plymouth is $3,174,000. Drainage improvements included in the Capital Improvement Plan are expected to cost $598,000. The Plan estimates that water will be the most expensive capital improvement for the city.

Estimated at over $7,000,000 Plymouth's water improvements include the Plymouth pipeline project, which is estimated at $5,000,000 and a new city wide water main estimated at over $1,000,000. Civic Center improvements are also planned for Plymouth. The city plans on a new Police Facility, Fire Facility, Corporation Yard, Museum, City Hall, and Library. These costs are estimated at over $6,000,000. Roark Webber stated, "There will be some great improvements in the future. What kind of improvements will depend on the citizens and the council."
