Prescribed Burning in Eldorado Nat’l Forest

slide11Fall prescribed burning will begin soon in the Eldorado National Forest and continue during the next few months as the weather and air quality conditions allow. The Forest Service cautions that anyone with respiratory illness or who thinks the smoke might adversely affect them should contact the nearest Eldorado National Forest Ranger Station and request to be put on a ‘sensitive person” pre-burn notification list. According to Eldorado Forest Supervisor Ramiro Villalvazo, Prescribed burning is designed to make the forest less susceptible to wildfires and to improve overall forest health. Approximately 7,000 acres of widely distributed acres of national forest lands are scheduled to be burned this fall and winter.

The burning activities will include both piles of tree tops, branches, and trunks left over from thinning activities and ground fires designed to remove unwanted vegetation growing under forest trees. Prescribed burning activities may begin as soon as Monday, October 8. Detailed maps of the burn locations are available on the Eldorado National Forest website. Additional information about burn locations can be obtained by contacting local Eldorado National Forest District offices in Pioneer. Eldorado National Forest Fuels Specialist Jennifer Boyd says that each prescribed burn is designed to minimize smoke drifting into residential areas. Smoke may continue to be present for days after the fires are ignited due to the large scale of the projects. Persons driving in the vicinity of the burns may encounter reduced highway visibility.
