The AWA board of directors will appoint a director to serve out the final nine months of Cooper’s term and the agency is taking letters of interest from registered voters who live in Supervisor District 3.

AWA General Manager Gene Mancebo announced the resignation Monday, saying the resignation occurred early last week, when Cooper came by his office. They had a discussion and then Cooper formally submitted his resignation.

Mancebo said government code lays out the filling of a vacancy, and basically for this position and given the point in his term, the Board can appoint someone to serve out the remainder of Cooper’s term. When it gets to a certain point in the term, the position can be filled without holding a vote to fill the balance of their terms.

He said Cooper resigned for health reasons effective Saturday, March 31. Cooper represented the Upcountry area’s District 3, including the Volcano, Pioneer and Buckhorn areas, since being elected in 2008 and taking office in January 2009. His service included a year as board vice president under former president Terence Moore, and a year as president. His current term expires in December 2012.

Mancebo said AWA directors will appoint a replacement to fill the vacant seat on the Board. Any voter of Supervisor District 3 who is interested in the position may submit a letter of interest to the Board. An ad hoc committee of two AWA Board members will review letters of interest, interview applicants and make a recommendation to the full board for approval.

Mancebo said the Board put together an ad hoc selection committee to interview candidates to make a recommendation to the full board. The committee is President Gary Thomas and Vice President Paul Molinelli. ¶ April 17 is the deadline for submitting letters of interest. Mancebo said they had to give at least 15 days between the selection and the notice, and they wanted to have more time for an interview process.

The AWA full board will consider an appointment at its April 26 regular scheduled meeting, he said, if the committee is prepared to make recommendation.

Letters of interest should be submitted to Clerk of the Board Cris Thompson at the Amador Water Agency office at 12800 Ridge Road in Sutter Creek. Letters must be submitted by 4 p.m. on April 17.

For information, contact Mancebo or Thompson at the AWA office, or by telephone at (209) 257-5245 or 257-5238. Story by Jim Reece
