The Sacramento
region's busiest interchange will be getting much needed improvements. Last Thursday, Caltrans showed
the public its plans to improve traffic for the Interstate-80/Interstate-5
interchange. The agency opened its doors and rolled out the maps, hoping
for public comment on the improvement project. Diane Reid, an Amador County
resident, is looking forward to the improvements. “I commute to work in Sacramento
six days a week. The interchange is an area that is always, I mean always
congested,” she said. Indeed, a significant amount of Amador County
residents commute to work in the Sacramento
metro area, and any improvements to the freeway are welcome.
Wayne Lewis of Caltrans says, "This is a
big interchange. And its two transcontinental corridors when you think about
it, interstate 5 runs all the way from Mexico
to Canada and I-80 is one of
the primary connections across the United States east and west."
Lewis says there will be a direct connector for east-bound I-80 to north bound I-5. Lewis adds,
"We're already seeing conditions break down... hear complaints from some
of the neighborhoods, saying people go through their neighborhoods to avoid
going through it." He says the hope is to reduce accidents. Caltrans
admits it has a way to go before construction can start. Project funding is pending with
rough estimates calling for $300 million. A third of that will be paid through
Measure A which voters renewed back in 2004.
