slide2Cold weather conditions combined with inattentiveness to the roadway continued to wreck havoc over the weekend. On Friday morning an accident occurred on Latrobe Road when Robert Liad 55 and of Sutter Creek was driving his 1995 Jeep northbound on Latrobe Road at about 35-40 miles per hours. According to Officer Mike LeMaster’s report Liad was attempting to use his cell phone and while looking down at his phone he inadvertently let the Jeep drift off the eastern edge of the road. Liad immediately turned hard to the left to bring the vehicle back onto the road and subsequently turned too far causing the Jeep to continue in a northwest direction across the southbound lane of Latrobe Road. The vehicle began to spin in a counter clock wise motion of the west roadway edge. The right side of the Jeep dug into he dirt shoulder causing it to roll onto its side and into a barbed wire fence. Liad was uninjured; however the accident is a reminder to pull over when distracted while driving- like when making cell phone calls.

Later that night at approximately 10:25pm an accident occurred on Hwy. 49 south of Hwy. 88. 21 year old Wilbert Ramirez-Alanis of Jackson was driving south bound on Hwy. 49 towards the Hwy. 88 split in Martell in his 1987 BMW. Alanis attempted to make a left turn to continue southbound onto Hwy. 49 and failed to complete his left turn and allowed his vehicle to travel off the west roadway edge and collide into a sign and embankment according to Officer Melissa Scobee’s report. Apparently, after the collision Alanis fled the scene and was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident.

slide5 On Saturday afternoon Officer Brian Hagemann responded to an accident on Hwy. 88 east of Hams Station. Whitney Saulsberry, 22 of San Jose, was west bound on Hwy. 88 at 45-50 miles per hour, when she claims she fell asleep at the wheel according to Officer Hagemann’s report. The 1997 Ford she was driving drifted off the north roadway edge, struck a paddle marker and several trees finally coming to rest against a tree. Saulsberry was transported to Sutter Amador Hospital with major injuries.

Almost an hour later another accident occurred on Hwy. 88 this time Officer Brandon Hallam responded. According to Officer Hallam’s report, J. Vidal, 32 and of Modesto was driving a 2005 Honda westbound on Hwy. 88 at approximately 50-55 miles per hour.Vidal quickly attempted to turn back into the lane and overcorrected causing him to loose control. The Honda slid across the oncoming eastbound lane and collided with a tree on the east bound shoulder.  As a result of the impact with the tree, Hallam reports, that Vidal sustained a laceration to his head. The right rear passenger was asleep with her head on the window and as a result suffered minor injuries. Another passenger in the vehicle was transported to SAH as well, as a precaution. Vidal was talking to his right front passenger and took his attention off of the roadway allowing his vehicle to drift partially onto the right-hand shoulder.

slide9 On Sunday morning the second accident of the weekend occurred on Latrobe Road. Officer Frank Peixoto reports that 20 year old Jonathan Petty of Granite Bay was traveling northbound on Latrobe Road, approaching the left curve at Lorentz Road in his 1995 Toyota. According to the CHP report Petty was traveling at unsafe speeds for the roadway conditions and was attempting to negotiate the curve without safely reducing his speed. As a direct result of his speed Petty allowed his vehicle to drift off the roadway and onto the east gravel shoulder. He turned left in an attempt to maintain control of his vehicle and overcorrected causing him to drive into the opposing southbound lane. Petty then abruptly made a hard right turn, at which point he completely lost control of his Toyota. The vehicle proceeded to re-enter the northbound lane in a sideways skid and began overturning. The vehicle came to rest, on its roof, directly east of the roadway. Officer Peixoto comments that “Fortunately Petty was utilizing his safety belt and his injuries were minor.” Petty was transported to SAH.
