slide19This weekend’s beautiful sunny weather was deceiving for many drivers as they encountered slick and icy roadways.  Late Friday morning an accident occurred on Hwy. 88 just west Silver Drive when Karen Strachan, 54 of Pioneer was traveling west bound on Hwy. 88 ascending the grade in her 2006 Ford F-250 entering a righthand curve. Strachan stated that she thought her speed was 25 mph, but according to CHP Officer Patrick Ong, he estimated her speed to be closer to 35-40 mph. Subsequently she lost control of her vehicle on the icy roadway and ran off of the north side of the highway causing her truck to overturn and collide with a tree. According to the report Strachan only had minor injuries. Just a half hour later at approximately at 11:05am Agnese Jekabsons, 53 of Pioneer was traveling eastbound in her 1997 Ford Taurus at an estimated speed of 40 mph entering Buckhorn in the upcountry area. According to Officer Patrick Ong’s report, Jekabson negotiate a curve to her left and lost control of her vehicle but her speed causing the Ford Taurus to run off the north side of the Highway and subsequently collide with a ditch embankment and over turned.

slide21 On Saturday at 10:30am an accident occurred on Hwy. 88 ½ mile west of Kirkwood Meadows Drive. According to Officer Mike LeMasters report a winter storm had passed through the day before, and an accumulation of snow and ice was present on the highway. The roadway from Ellis Road, 20 miles west of the collision scene at that time, was classified as R-1 road conditions, meaning the speed limit was 25 mph in the area, a vehicle must have mud and snow tires as well as carry chains.  D. Attkisson improperly put tire chains on his 1999 Toyota and inflicted body damage to the fenders of his vehicle. The tire chains eventually broke and Attkisson took them off about 5 miles west of the collision scene, near Kay’s Resort. Being only 5 miles from Kirkwood Ski Resort apparently Attkisson decided to cross the Carson Spur with out the Chains. According to LeMasters report Attkisson was driving eastbound on Hwy. 88 on a two lane portion of the Hwy.. This portion of the roadway also has a 4% down-hill grade and proceeds into a sweeping left curve. The 1999 Toyota that he was driving began to spin in a counter clock wise motion into the west bound lanes of Hwy. 88 impacting the front of J. Quillian of Carson City Nevada’s 1992 Chevy vehicle. According to the report neither Attkisson nor Quillian were injured in the accident.

On Sunday evening Officer Cheryl Wilburn responded to an accident on Shake Ridge Road east of Manzanita Road. According to her CHP report 63 year old Albert Lombardo of Pleasanton was driving his 1997 Toyota 4Runner westbound on Shake Ridge Road while 19 year old Travis Sharps of Sutter Creek was traveling east bound on Shake Ridge Road in his 1999 Chevy Silverado. As Lombardo rounded a right hand curve the back end of his vehicle slid to the left, Lombardo steering to the right, however he over corrected and crossed over into the opposing lane of traffic. Sharps steered to the right and applied his brakes but was unable to stop prior the Lombardo’s vehicle striking the Chevy. Lombardo’s vehicle continued to spin and came to rest on the south shoulder on its side. No injuries were sustained by either party in the accident. Colder weather is expected later this week which will lead to even icy conditions in the lower elevations.
