At the Tuesday meeting the Board of Supervisor’s adopted several resolutions that ultimately put into motion a Community Facilities District (CFD) to levy a Special Tax to finance Fire Protection Services.  The properties within the CFD total 40.86 acres, which is split into 4 main areas and range in location from Martell to the upcountry. The first area is located north of Ridge Road and northeast of Climax Road; the second just east of Pioneer volcano Road and north of Hwy. 88 near Red Corral Road; while the 3rd area is located on the north east corner of Industry Boulevard and Prospect Drive; the final area is located west of Tower Drive and south of Industry Boulevard near the third area.

According to County Administrative Officer, Pat Blacklock on Jan. 2nd the County and MCSP’s New Warden Rich Subia all met. “The purpose of the meeting was simply to introduce ourselves, establish a relationship and discuss issues of concern.  The County extended an invitation to meet once we learned there was a new warden,” according to Blacklock. Supervisor’s Louis Boitano and Richard Forster, County Administrative Officer Patrick Blacklock, and County Counsel Martha Shaver all attended.  Both Supervisors appeared to be encouraged by the meeting.

In response to forecasts for unusually cold temperatures throughout much of California in the coming days, officials with the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) and the California Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), as well as local agencies such as the Jackson Water Department urged Californians to prepare themselves, their family members, and their animals for the possible effects of the inclement weather.

The National Weather Service has reported to OES that temperatures will drop into the 20 and 30s Wednesday night into Thursday, followed by daytime temperatures in the mid 40s in most areas. On Friday and into the weekend, temperatures will drop further, reaching the high teens to low 20s in most areas at night, and continued daytime lows in the mid 40s.

Yesterday morning the Amador Water Agency held interviews for the replacement of now Supervisor Ted Novelli on the Amador Water Agency Board. The Board of Directors for the agency is patterned after the Board of Supervisors and thus each Director represents a supevisorial district. The opening on the board, created by Novelli’s election to the Board of Supervisors is for district 3 which encompasses much of the upcountry areas of the county. Applying for the position was a previous short term member Dave Thomas from Pine Grove.

Calaveras County Chief Probation Officer Michael Kriletich took his place on the podium with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and other prominent law enforcement officials on December 21, 2006 as the Governor unveiled his comprehensive prison reform proposal.  Along with the addition of 16,238 beds in state correctional facilities, and 45,000 local jail beds, the proposal includes a proposed $50 million augmentation to adult probation services for the 2007-2008 budget year and $100 million for both the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 budget years.  The proposal also commits hundreds of millions of dollars to juvenile probation programs. 

Amador County Public Schools, under the leadership of Superintendent Mike Carey and Board of Trustee member Pat Miller has refocused the district on the importance of vocational education. This as the number of workers to perform specialized jobs requiring skills and training, but not necessarily a college degree has grown as a need in our rapidly developing state. Miller, upon his election, made the growth of the voc ed programs locally a priority. Dr. Carey has also focused on the vocational ed pathway for students by forming the Schools Business Alliance, a local group of business owners and school officials, that looks for opportunities for kids to work in local businesses as interns of sorts, and seek educational experiences and training for their future while in still high school.

Chief of Police Scott Morrison proudly introduced 3 new Reserve Police Officers to the Jackson City Council on Monday. Laurie Smith, Rachel Brager and 27 year CHP veteran John Kellogg joined the Department. Morrison also presented Kellogg with two resolutions from Assemblyman Alan Nakanishi and Senator Dave Cox’s Office for his 27years of dedicated service on the California Highway Patrol. Later under Administrative reports Morrison reported that due to Detective Chris Mynderup’s outstanding work the suspect who attacked School District employee Jeff Baxter is in custody. He also reported that the suspect is being investigated for several other crimes throughout the City of Jackson. Also good news, the couple responsible for an arson that occurred on Amador Street in April of 2006 could be facing conviction for their crimes. Carletta Johnson and Sean Rowell, on the night of April 30th, threw two incendiary devices at a home located on Amador Street causing the home to burst into flames and endanger the occupants within. Sean Rowell has been convicted of Arson with special circumstances with Explosive Devises, while Carletta Johnson was given a 3 year sentence upon her conviction of arson. Rowell will be appearing soon in Amador Superior Court for sentencing.
