Local fire crews were hopping yesterday with a reported 4 fires throughout the county. The first to be reported was a fire at 4600 Jackson Valley Road yesterday morning. The fire, while first reported at 3 acres, spread to 11 acres in size. The fire did not threaten any structures.
Jackson City Manager Mike Daly made a presentation to the Council on Monday regarding the AWA’s proposed rate increase and the impact it will have on the City’s budget. The AWA’s Financial Plan and Water Rate Study proposes an initial 22% increase and then, in addition, an average increase of 12% for the next 3 consecutive years. On Monday night the AWA Council’s appointments to the Jackson Planning Commission were made. On June 30th the seats Warren Carlton, David Butow and Wayne Garibaldi all expire. While Garibaldi and Butow reapplied Carlton chose not to. The City advertised for interested persons and received applications from: Walter Hoeser, Steve McLean, and Katy Pridy. Also an application from Keith Sweet was received after the June 20th deadline.
Yesterday the Angora Fire in the Lake Tahoe area jumped its fire line near Tallac Village. Residents were ordered to evacuate. According to a US Forest Spokesman the fire line breach was caused by embers that caused a crown fire in a tree which then spread rapidly.
The CHP reports that Amador County roadways saw a rash of motorcycle accidents Monday with two out of three accidents reported involving motorcycles. This rash of accidents came after an unusually quiet weekend. The first accident was reported around 6:10 am on Sugar Pine Drive after Thomas Evans of Pioneer swerved to avoid a deer that was in the roadway.
Last night’s Jackson City Council meeting focused on law enforcement as Chief of Police Scott Morrison explained to the Council last that the Sheriff’s Office and the local Police Departments are pursuing the re-implementation of the Amador Narcotic Enforcement Unit or ANEU. The Sheriff’s Office historically has taken the lead on the joint narcotics taskforce in Amador County. Ralph Stephen Garbarini, former Jackson resident pleaded guilty today to fatally gunning down a businessman at a popular dessert cafe in an apparently random act. Garbarini, admitted in Court today to shooting San Diego resident Michael Fineman at point-blank range Dec. 30, minutes after being thrown out of the restaurant by staff. Last Friday an accident that looked nothing short of devastating was reported around 9:30 pm on Hwy 88 near the Pioneer Lodge. This car was split in half after the driver lost control, skidded sideways into a large cedar tree, uprooted the tree and chopped the bottom off.
