In recent weeks the subject of Domestic Violence has come to the forefront in the media because of the NFL players involved. Though Amador County does not have an NFL team, we DO have domestic violence. Operation Care provided services to 213 domestic violence victims (men and women) just this year. Instead of asking "why she stays" let's ask "how do we stop this"? As a community we must join together and be "GAME CHANGERS". We must state collectively that Domestic Violence is not acceptable in our community. You cannot do this to our friends, our neighbors, or our family members. This is not a woman's issue - this is a human issue.
The spotlight has been on Domestic violence recently, because the NFL has given us an opportunity to have the conversation. Operation Care has been providing domestic violence and sexual assault support services and education to this community for over 33 years. We have recently joined with over 450 similar agencies in submitting a letter to football Commissioner Roger Goodell requesting that the NFL be proactive and bold by making a significant investment in a long-term, comprehensive community engagement campaign focused on ending violence.
We would like to ask the same of our local community. During the month of October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, help us STOP domestic violence in our community, and increase awareness of the issue. Operation Care has organized several awareness activities during the month and ask that you join the conversation and speak out against domestic.
- Watch for "Purple People" in various locations throughout Amador County. These life-sized purple silhouettesrepresent local domestic violence victims and their stories of courage and hope.
- On October 25th, the "Purple People" will come to life as victims and supporters walk/run together in the Second Annual PURPLE SOLDIER NEON FUN RUN. Participants will complete the run/walk in the dark using glow sticks, flashlights, and street lights.
- Purple Soldier Baskets will be located at various locations around Amador County. Each basket is filled with free purple bracelets, ribbons, and stickers. We encourage you to wear these items in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and increasing awareness of domestic violence.
If you belong to a group, or you are a coach or a youth leader, you have the power and opportunity to create awareness and shift attitudes to encourage a healthy and safe community. Operation Care staff can meet with your team or group and talk about healthy relationships and the long term effects of domestic violence. As adults and role models it is our responsibility to make sure that the kids in our care are given every resource and opportunity to be a Game Changer. Let's put a STOP to Domestic Violence and change the game forever.

About Operation Care
Operation Care has been providing services and safe shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault since 1980. During the 2011/12 fiscal year, Operation Care housed 72 women, children, and men. This is TWO TIMES the number housed in 2010/11. Advocates helped 54 victims with temporary restraining orders, and provided crisis intervention to 44 sexual assault victims. The staff provided 344 peer counseling sessions, and hundreds of transports to appointments, court, and other locations.
